Venue Hire

 

Greyfriars Kirk is an iconic building in the heart of Edinburgh’s capital city.  Whilst first and foremost a worshiping church, the Kirk can be hired for a variety of uses.  Here are examples of the versatility of the space:

Weddings and special services.   With a beautiful setting, the Kirk is regularly used for wedding, funeral and memorial services.  You don’t need to be a member of the congregation or have any formal links with the Kirk.

Concerts and music events. With a fantastic acoustic, the Kirk is used for numerous music events during the year.  The Kirk can accommodate large and small orchestras and choral groups.  The Kirk can be laid up to face the chancel or the organ - depending on the music programme.   Additional staging can be used to elevate performers in the orchestra and choir as required.  

Kirk Instruments The Kirk’s famous Collins organ (c 1990) (full details here) and C6X Yamaha concert grand piano (c 2014) are also available for hire. 

Exhibitions and Fairs.  With a large wooden floor space the Kirk is an ideal setting for exhibitions and fairs. Works of art, including pictures, carvings, furniture and trade exhibitions can be accommodated. The Kirk is also used for commercial craft fairs. Additional pillar lighting can be provided to enhance works.

Receptions, dances and Social events.   The Kirk is an ideal space for a wedding receptions, anniversary parties and other social events.  The Kirk also makes a stunning backdrop for corporate events.  The wooden floor is ideal for formal and informal dancing and is used regularly for ceilidhs.

Conferences and Lectures.  With a newly installed sound amplification system the Kirk makes for an attractive setting for ‘away day’ conferences and lectures.  There is an induction loop.  A 2 x 3 metre plasma screen and projector can be hired.  With a kitchen at the rear of the Kirk catering facilities can be incorporated into your event.

Recordings, broadcasts.  Centrally located within a quiet Kirkyard and therefore free of traffic noise, the Kirk is an ideal venue for broadcasting – for television and radio or commercial recording projects . Parking is available for outside broadcasting and equipment vehicles.

Amenities/Facilities   The Kirk’s amenities can be used to enhance any of the events above.

Clergy and Event Management Cover. For all our services and events, the Kirk's experienced management team is on hand. We will engage and advise you to ensure that where possible your requirements can be incorporated. At concerts we arrange volunteer stewards and caterers as required.

Staging.  Twenty 2 x 1 metre platforms are available for use as staging with orchestras, choirs and plays. These can provide single or multi flat or tiered platform configurations to suit requirements within the Kirk.

Sound system.  Installed in 2016, state of the art sound system ensures everyone in the Kirk can hear the spoken word and prerecorded music.  NB. Not suitable for instrument mixing/amplification. 

3 Phase Electricity. Power sockets are available in all four corners of the building for events requiring 3 phase (40 amp) electricity.

Kitchen.  This is situated under the organ with direct access to the sanctuary. No cooking facilities but ideal as a preparation space.  Hot water, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and bench space.

Access.  No steps to enter/exit main ground floor.  Wheelchair compliant.

Parking. Limited available for key organisers, VIPs by prior arrangement only.

Seating capacities/Licences and Insurance. The Kirk has a City of Edinburgh Council Performing Entertainment Licence (PEL) and a Market Operators' Licence. The performance licence allows a maximum capacity of 600 inside the Kirk (including performers/staff). A comfortable capacity for concerts is 350* for East End and 300* for West End performances. Sight lines can be obstructed by pillars and other fittings. For fairs, 35 tables are permitted. For social events 100-200* are ideal numbers for a sit-down reception (10-20 round/square tables). The Kirk has public liability insurance. The Kirk does not possess and alcohol licence.

*These numbers are indicative only. Depending on the specific event requirements, capacities will be agreed with the Operations Manager and organiser.
