At the end of April Richard Frazer and Jo Elliot set out on a pilgrimage across Scotland, from Dunadd to St Andrews. But what made it a pilgrimage, and not just a long walk?
Like all journeys, this one started with a map, or rather half a dozen maps spread over the floor of Richard’s study. Andrew Patterson, Kate’s brother in law, was the inspiration, and soon there was a long list of possible starting points and destinations. Iona was rapidly dismissed, because it’s the start of a 2 day slog through the Ross of Mull. Dunadd, close to the Crinan Canal in Argyll, had plenty of history and good walking, and St Andrews Cathedral was the seat of the pre-reformation church in Scotland and seemed the obvious pilgrimage destination. Dunadd was where Aidan, first Christian King of Scotland, was crowned by St Columba in 574 AD.
