Great site and I plan on visiting the Kirk in 2005. One suggestion though would be to give a brief history on the National Covenant - is this the same as the "Solemn League and Covenant" with which the Church of Scotland adopted the Westminster Confession of Faith and its sister documents as its Standards?

We visited your church and, of course, your churchyard. We found it al very interesting. We first visited when the church was already closed. On july 21 we came back and visited the church. The man who was helping in the shop, gave us a tour through the church which was very interesting. Thank you very much for that!

My ancestor John Campbell was a member of the New Greyfriar Church in the late 1700's - he & Miss Elizabeth McIntyre of the Tolbooth Kirk were married March 14, 1795 - I have a copy of the the OPR record. My daughter & I will be in Ediburgh on August 12th & plan to visit your beautiful Church..

I could not view the kirk but had a great visit with just reading all the history. I am the first generation born here as my grandparents and father came here in 1911 from Alva. My father was 4 at that time. I am doing genealogy and find all these things most interesting. Would love someday to visit Scotland. I am a lifetime member of The First Presbyterian Church of Panther Valley. We are a merged church with 2 others having merged with us due to the lack of work in this area as the coal mines closed in the late 1950's and the young have move away to find other jobs. We may find up to about 50 people on a Sunday morning for the service. As I read I realize churches all over are having the same problem and the young are becoming less and less religious as the years go by. Even though we have raised our children in the proper way they seem to forget for a time where they belong on a Sunday and where their faith was started. Sandra P. Hill

I stumbled upon your site as a link from the BBC site. I am impressed by the restoration you have done since I attended Heriot's end of term services in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I must drop in next time I am home. As a note to visitors to the Kirk, when you have finished your tour of the Kirk and the Churchyard go through the gates to Heriot's School - another of Scotland's historic gems.

Thanks for the lovely virtual tour, our St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, built in 1872 had it's front spires patterned after your church, but, unfortunately it was struck by lightning and burned to the ground Aug. 5, 1984, it was rebuilt but without the gothic steeples and her majestic beauty is dearly missed, thanks for the memories!!

When visiting Greyfriars Churchyard, be sure and see the Memorial monument at the grave-site of many murdered Covenanters. (At the wall looking down to Grassmarket.) It has a terrific and gripping inscription.
