Visiting

From November to March, the Kirk is only open to visitors on a Thursday between 1.30 and 3.30. We are a three-star historic attraction, as awarded by VisitScotland. On hand are welcomers from the Society of Friends of Greyfriars Kirk to answer any questions and to show you around the building. There is a museum to visit, a DVD about our history to watch and a shop where you can buy books on the kirk and the story of Greyfriars Bobby, as well as postcards and souvenirs.

If you take any photos of your visit, be sure to add them to our flickr group. They might end up here on the website!

The kirk is located just off George IV Bridge, 10 minutes walk from Waverley Station. You can get to us by using Lothian Buses service numbers 23, 27, 41, 42, 45 and 67.

Volunteers Wanted

Through the work of The Society of Friends of the Kirk of Greyfriars, we welcome the thousands of tourists who visit the Church and Kirk yard every year. From April to October, the Friends host our Visitor Centre and shop Mon - Fri 10.30am - 4.30pm and Sat 10.30am - 2.30pm. Over the past few years the number of visitors has greatly increased, coming from every corner of the globe to the place where the National Covenant was signed in 1638, and where Greyfriars Bobby kept vigil at his master's grave for 14 years.

Our current guides find meeting visitors both enjoyable and satisfying, and as so many important events have taken place at Greyfriars over the centuries, there is something to interest every visitor. In order to continue to provide a welcome to tourists, we are always looking to recruit more voluntary guides, welcomers and shop hosts.

Volunteers need not have experience as training will be offered. If you can spare at least three hours per week, please contact Alison Horsley on (0131) 225 1900 or email the office at administrator@greyfriarskirk.com.
