Welcome to Greyfriars
Greyfriars Kirk is a church community in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland. The church was founded in 1620 and has a fascinating history which you can read about in our heritage section.
As a Church of Scotland congregation, on a Sunday we worship in the Presbyterian tradition, and in partnership with St Columba's-by-the-Castle, and Augustine United Church. We welcome people of all faiths and none.
We are committed to following Christ all through the week. Through the work of The Society of Friends of the Kirk of Greyfriars, we welcome the thousands of tourists who visit the Church and Kirkyard every year. From April to October, the Friends host our Visitor Centre and shop Mon - Fri 10.30am - 4.30pm and Sat 10.30am - 2.30pm. Full details of our opening hours can be found in our contact section.
Our current guides find meeting visitors both enjoyable and satisfying, and as so many important events have taken place at Greyfriars over the centuries, there is something to interest every visitor. Group visits, hosted by our knowledgeable 'guides' can be arranged by contacting our office on 0131 225 1900 or email administrator@greyfriarskirk.com. See our vacancies page if you would be interested in becoming a volunteer.

We offer hospitality to those who attend the many concerts and events in our building. Finally, through our work in the Grassmarket, we walk alongside the city's vulnerable community, particularly those with experience of homelessness. This service is also worship for us and we rejoice in it.
To find out what sort of people are involved in the Church of Scotland, have a look at this wee film about a new resource called 'Threads'. The last few minutes of the film (beginning just before eight minutes in) feature our minister, Richard Frazer, talking about how we hope to live out our Christian lives here in Edinburgh.

Ordained Jane 10am, 13th June 2009
Rev Jane Blackley, who worked at Greyfrairs for about a year and a half as part of her probation, was ordained last week in Brechin. A bus of Greyfriars folk went up to see it. Have a look at Ishbel's blog entry here.
Our New Blog 5pm, 21st October 2009
Greyfriars Kirk really has exploded onto the World Wide Web in a big way this week. Not only do we have this new website and a wonderful flickr group, but we also have a brand new blog. We will be posting lots of kinds of things about the life of the church; the work we do, the fun we have, the things we think about and things we like in the outside world. Different people will write, photos will go up, all sorts. If you want to submit anything then drop us an email at administrator@greyfriarskirk.com. Let the blogging commence!
New Website Up and Running 6pm, 21st October 2009
What a hugely exciting day this is! The new Website is available to the Whole World Wide Web World! After many months of planning, Ben Hall (our wonderous designer), Ishbel McFarlane (schpeel writer and picture chooser) and Richard (minister and stuff) have been slaving away over a hot modem to bring you the sequin-spangled site. If you have any thoughts please email them to us at administrator@greyfriarskirk.com.
